How safe is South Africa?
In the past decade, South Africa has significantly reduced crime and improved the safety of tourists. Recently, the country showcased its wonderful tourism industry as it hosted the tremendously successful FIFA World Cup of Soccer. Safety is our highest priority — from our accommodations, to our meals, transportation, and service projects. Every component of the program is built to ensure the safety of our students, while allowing them to explore and experience South Africa.
What kind of accommodations and meals will be provided in South Africa?
All students will stay in modern accommodations with their own single bed and access to clean drinking water, and they will be able to have a hot shower daily. Meals will be at restaurants and in dining halls, and sometimes the group will work together in the kitchen to prepare dinners.
Will it be easy for my family to contact me?
Trip leaders will carry cell phones so that our students can be contacted at any time. About every three days a detailed newsletter will be sent to parents by email, complete with pictures, quotes from the students, and updates on our trip. Students will have daily access to email, but will be encouraged to use it only occasionally.
Will I have time to study or work on school assignments?
With much downtime in the evenings and during travel, students can study for tests like the SATs, complete their summer reading assignments, and still find lots of time to write in their journals.
What will I need for my passport/ visa?
Students from the USA, Canada, Korea, and many other countries will not need visas. If a student needs a visa, Ivy Leader staff will help prepare the necessary documents to successfully receive one. For more information on visa requirements, please visit the Department of Home Affairs South Africa website.
Do I need vaccinations?
No vaccinations are required by the South African government, but Ivy Leader students will be required to be up-to-date on certain vaccinations. Although we travel to South Africa during the winter season and malaria risks are very low, students will be required to take daily malaria pills when entering a malaria area.
Is there a minors protection policy?
Ivy Leader adheres to Dartmouth’s minors protection policy. More information can be found here.
