Dartmouth College (8 Days):
Leadership · Service · College Prep · Collaboration · Global Awareness · Campus Life
Ivy Leader March Break at Dartmouth is our newest program that takes place for one week in Hanover, NH.
Hanover, a small college town on the banks of the Connecticut River, is a wonderful location to collaborate with other motivated students who want to become better leaders in their schools and communities. The town is most famously the home of Dartmouth College, one of the first nine American colleges and a prominent member of the Ivy League.
Ivy Leader students will stay at the historic and newly renovated Hanover Inn, overlooking the scenic central commons of Dartmouth College, the Green. During this time, Ivy Leader students will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, gain valuable college preparation knowledge, partner with local community service organizations, and become better informed global citizens—while surrounded by the natural beauty of New Hampshire.
Highlights of the week include:
Lectures taught by Dartmouth and Tuck School of Business professors on subjects such as finding one’s own leadership style, critical thinking, innovation, and presentation and public speaking skills, and situational leadership.
- Students will have the opportunity to participate in engaging, dynamic discussions led by professors from Dartmouth College and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth—two top-ranked Ivy League undergraduate and business schools, respectively.
A college admissions seminar, focused on application strategies and essay writing
- This seminar will be led by college admissions expert Leslie Drew, a Dartmouth graduate and director of Ivy League Advantage – Essay Excellence. Leslie will provide information that will help students gain insight into the college application process, with a focus on how to write a compelling essay.
Grade-specific SAT preparation sessions with a pre-and post-practice test
- Students will participate in small group SAT tutoring sessions led by Upper Valley Tutoring, founded by Andrew Richman who received his BA from Harvard College and Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from Loyola University of Chicago. With highly qualified tutors in math and reading/writing, students will receive two hours of tutoring most mornings with time allotted for studying each evening. There will be a pre-test offered on Sunday that will allow for better context when learning test taking and question attack strategies, and a post-test on Saturday to track progress.
A team project designed to develop collaborative problem-solving and decision-making skills; and raise awareness on social equity issues
- Students will participate in a “Great Leaders” team project that has each student do some research prior to arriving to the program on a influential world leader of their choice. The team will need to decide as a group what leader they will choose, and work together to use each individual’s unique style of leadership to contribute to a strong final presentation. The process of working together as a team in this project will be emphasized as much as the research topic itself.
A community service project with a local organization
- Service-learning is one of Ivy Leader’s core values, and during this week students will have the chance to partner with a local organization that provides temporary support—be it shelter, educational programming, food, or clothing—to homeless individuals and families in need in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont.
Lodging at the Hanover Inn, a world-class boutique hotel located on the Dartmouth College campus
- Lodging at its finest! Students will stay at the iconic Hanover Inn, overlooking the Dartmouth College green. For more information, visit http://www.hanoverinn.com/
